Choosing a dog breed is for your new puppy is always an exciting and interesting experience. If you happen to live in a house with a large backyard, then you don't have to restrict yourself to small dogs or dogs that don't require lots of activity, you can choose a dog that will have a great time running around and playing in the backyard. However, if you happen to have young kids, then you also need to be considerate of the type of temperament that the dog has. There are some active dogs that are great for adults but are a bit too active and excitable for families with young children. Breeders like Bar R Kennels will make sure that your new puppy is the perfect fit for your family. That said, there are plenty of dogs that love to be outside and are also have a great temperament that is perfect for households with young kids. Here are three breeds to consider:

Dalmatian

The perennial favorite of fire departments, the Dalmatian also makes a perfect family pet. These dogs have an abundance of energy, but also a super good temperament. They are extremely obedient, which is why they are so good working with fireman. So, you don't have to worry about the dogs running wild around your kids, they will follow your commands quite well. Additionally, while they are big dogs, they are not super big, so there is not the same sort of worry that the dog might accidentally hurt your child while playing; an issue with some of the really big dog breeds out there.

Collie

The Collie is a really beautiful dog that is perfect for a house with young kids. As anyone who watches dog shows will attest, the Collie is an extremely graceful and well-behaved breed. They don't have quite the energy as some other dogs, though they do like to get outside and run around a bit. Their graceful temperament is extremely important when it comes to kids. They are not likely to roughhouse and injure your kids. The one thing to consider is that they do have a long coat, unlike the Dalmatian and the Lab (the next breed on the list) so they do require a bit more extensive grooming.

Labrador Retriever

There are many reasons why the Lab is considered the most popular dog breed according to the AKC. It has a perfect temperament, which is one reason it makes for the ideal service dog. This sort of easy-going temperament also makes it perfect for families with young kids. The lab will be a dog that won't get super aggressive around your kids, or roughhouse them while playing. Also, they love exercising outside, playing fetch, and are a great all around dog to bring to the park as well as play with in the yard. Also, they don't require extensive grooming. Unlike the similar Golden Retriever, the Lab has a shorter coat that does not require the same effort to keep clean and untangled. They are really a perfect choice when selecting a puppy for your new family.
